COURSE GUIDE

Wind Ensemble I
2-3 years playing experience is necessary along with an audition and approval by their middle school director. All freshmen wind ensemble students must take this class before taking Wind Ensemble II unless they take the Blue Crew PEP/Marching Band along with the Wind Ensemble II class. Private lessons are recommended. A majority of the students in this class are 9th and 10th grade students.

Wind Ensemble II (Honors Credit)
This class is by audition only. Freshmen wishing to take this class must audition and also participate in the Blue Crew PEP/Marching Band. Private lessons are required. This class has some sophomores, a small number of freshmen, and largely 10th and 11th grade students.

Orchestra
2-3 years playing experience is necessary along with an audition and approval by their middle school director. Private lessons are recommended. This group performs music that ranges in difficulty from intermediate to advanced. At various times throughout the year, students from this group perform pieces written for full orchestra. Students from this group are also selected to play in the school musical. Currently, Agoura High School's orchestra has over 40 strings and serves grades 9-12.

Women's Choir
This class is required for incoming freshmen vocal students wishing to eventually join Mixed Choir. Approval by a middle school music teacher is necessary to take this course unless an audition is performed for Mr. Bloom. Students who have never sang in an ensemble may take a simple listening test with Mr. Bloom to determine whether they would be able to keep up with the class. The class focuses on basic music fundamentals, basic vocal technique, and levels of music that range in difficulty from easy to advanced. This class is open to all grade levels, and usually has a mixture of mostly freshmen and select 10-12th grade students.

Jazz "B" Band
2-3 years playing experience is necessary along with an audition and approval by your middle school music director. It is highly recommended that students enrolled in this class also take Wind Ensemble I or Marching/Pep Band. Priority will go to those enrolled in a Wind Ensemble or Marching Band class. Private lessons are highly recommended. This class is primarily for freshmen students but is open to all grade levels based on their audition. Please see the information at the bottom of this page.

Jazz "A" Ensemble
This class is available to select freshmen students who have demonstrated an ability to excel in the style of Jazz music. 2-3 years playing experience is necessary along with an audition and approval by your middle school music director. It is highly recommended that students enrolled in this class also take Wind Ensemble I or Marching/Pep Band. Priority will go to those enrolled in a Wind Ensemble or Marching Band class in the event of students performing auditions at equal levels. Private lessons are highly recommended. One year of Jazz B is recommended before joining Jazz A. Please see the information at the bottom of this page.

Studio Jazz Ensemble
Incoming sophomores may audition for this class once they have completed a year of another ensemble at Agoura High. Freshmen are not accepted into this class.

Mixed Choir
Female vocalists wishing to take this class must participate in one year of Women's Choir before auditioning as an incoming sophomore. Freshmen Male vocalists must arrange an audition with Mr. Mosley.

Marching/Pep Band - Also known as, "Blue Crew Band."
2-3 years of playing experience is recommended for this class OR at least a year of beginning band at Agoura High School. No audition is necessary, but approval from your middle school teacher is required. This group rehearses with the Wind Ensemble I class during period 3. During the football season, this class performs at all home football games and select away games. In addition, students receive P.E. Credit for this class. Students in this class rehearse basic marching steps and formations for the performance in the Reyes Adobe Parade, Pep Rallies, and football pre-game/half-time shows. One after-school rehearsal per week is required during the football season.

Beginning Band
This is a non-performing class that works on the fundamentals of playing an instrument and reading music. Students may choose which instrument they would like to learn. Students in this class are expected to be able to work independently and in a classroom setting. Experienced TA students assist Mr. Mosley in helping to teach technique on specific instruments. Based on the progress of each individual student, students may audition to become a part of Wind Ensemble I, Blue Crew Band, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra or Choir. All grade levels are welcome in this course.

Music Appreciation
This course is open to any student wishing to learn about the fundamentals of music through listening. A large part of the course also focuses on the following main topics: World Music, Classical Music, The History Of Jazz, The History of Rock & Roll. Weekly homework assignments encourage the use of techonology, and group assignments focus on the composition of lyrics or music through the use of Garage Band. A couple times a year, guest speakers are brought in to the class to discuss the music industry and the jobs that are available in that field. This course is open to students of any grade level.
