Friday, May 15, 2009
This is a reminder to all seniors: If you want to attend a two-year private college away from home, but still close
to Agoura, the admissions counselor from Marymount College in Palos Verdes today told students that Marymount is still accepting applications online at www.marymountpv.edu. You will also be required to send in an official transcript. It costs $40 to apply.

Juniors: If you are planning to apply to any University of California campuses this fall, the prompts for the personal statements are now available for you to start preparing, AHS Head Counselor Mrs. Pat Brooke announced at the May 13 PFC meeting. And be sure to attend the lunch visit with the admissions counselor from UCLA in the College & Career Center on Friday, May 29! Check the schedule below for more scheduled college visits, including Pierce, Princeton, UCLA and West Point U.S. Military Academy.

Following are the explanations and prompts:

Write your personal statement in advance
Your personal statement—consisting of responses to two prompts—is your chance to tell us who you are
and what’s important to you. Think of it as your opportunity to introduce yourself to the people reading
your application. Be open, be honest, be real. What you tell us in your personal statement gives readers the context to better understand the rest of the information you’ve provided in your application.
A couple of tips: Read each prompt carefully and be sure to respond to all parts. Use specific, concrete examples to support the points you want to make. Take time to write, rewrite and edit. Show it to a
teacher, counselor or friend for comments, but make sure the words you use are your own.
Finally, relax. This is one of many pieces of information we consider in reviewing your application; an admission decision will not be based on your personal statement alone.
Instructions:
• Respond to both prompts, using a maximum of 1,000 words total.
• You may allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words.
• Stay within the word limit as closely as you can. A little over — 1,012 words, for example — is fine.
PROMPT #1
Freshman applicants: Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

PROMPT #2
All applicants: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Following the personal statement, there’s a section called Additional Comments. Use this space—up to 500 words—to tell us anything you want us to know about you or your academic record that you have
not had the opportunity to describe elsewhere in the application.

ALSO........
Last week during Open House parents of juniors (“rising seniors”) asked for the website list of college applications given out during Open House as well as the list of upcoming college fairs.

Also requested was the list of college acceptances for the AHS Class of 2008 as well as the definition of the admissions terms regular decision, early decision, rolling admissions, early action and restrictive early action (also referred to as single choice early action).

Where to find College applications
1. Every college website will have information about its own application under admissions for incoming freshmen.
2. The University of California’s application will be available to fill out in October, 2009, then submitted from Nov. 1 – Nov. 30, 2009, at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply Students fill out one application and check the campuses to which they wish to apply. (The UCs offer only regular decision admissions.)
3. The California State University application will be online at www.csumentor.edu beginning in October, 2009 and students may submit their applications from Oct. 1 – Nov. 30, 2009, unless specific campuses extend the deadline (which happened this year). Students submit their Cal State applications campus by campus. Students may begin filling out their applications by starting now and filling out their classes and grades by semester from their freshman year! Go online to www.csumentor.edu to the Plan” tab and click on admissions requirements; then click on high school planner; then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “create an account” and begin filling in the classes and grades since freshman year. When juniors become seniors and start to fill out the Cal State application, using the same username, all this information will be populated onto your application! (Hint: use your own personal email password for your username password so you won’t forget it!) (California State Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo is the only Cal State that will accept early decision applications.)
4. Almost 400 U.S. colleges and universities will accept the Common Application found online at www.commonapp.org. Seniors will be able to fill out one application and submit that one application to any number of colleges. Be aware that some individual colleges may require “supplements” to the Common Application and those additions will be listed on the Common Application chart on the website. This chart will also list links to the individual college’s admissions websites so you can research whether the college accepting the Common Application will offer regular or rolling decisions; early decision, early action or single choice early action.
5. Another website similar to the Common Application is the universalcollegeapp.com
Their “expanded spreadsheet” will also list whether the 84 individual member colleges accepting the Universal College Application will offer regular or rolling decisions; early decision, early action or single choice early action admissions.
6. Seniors interested in applying to conservatories will find applications to eight schools, (on www.unifiedapps.org, including Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Boston Conservatory, but no longer Juilliard.

Schedule of Upcoming College Fairs
Seniors are strongly encouraged to attend College Fairs this spring rather than wait for Agoura’s joint College Fair this September with Calabasas, Oak Park high schools because of local school district budget crisis concerns that could eliminate our planning our own college fair.
There are several college fairs already scheduled:

The National Association of College Admissions Counselors have four College Fairs scheduled in our area:

--March 25 and 26, 2009, go online to www.CollegeWeekLive.com for the world's largest college fair-online or offline. The online-only free college fair-held multiple times each year-brings high schools students, parents, guidance counselors, admissions experts, and colleges together-transcending time, cost, and distance. College Week Live provides live access to college admissions officers from hundreds of colleges, from Stanford to UCLA to Dartmouth to the University of Miami.

--6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at the Pasadena Convention Center;

--9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the Pasadena Convention Center;

--5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Seaside Park in Ventura.

--Moorpark High School’s college adviser has invited Agoura students and families to attend the Moorpark High School College Fair and Workshops from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2009. (There will be a special “College: Making It Happen” presentation for 8th grade students and parents from 6 to 7 p.m. that same evening at Moorpark High School’s Educational Center, next to the old gym.)

--1 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors has scheduled its annual “Performing and Visual Arts College Fair” at Ackerman Union on the UCLA campus.

From: the College & Career Center
FOR Wednesday's bulletin, March 11, 2009

Juniors interested in leadership programs: Pepperdine University is
offering its five-day "Youth Citizenship Seminar" from June 22 -- June 26.
Please email College & Career Adviser Mrs. Hawkins or see your counselor if you want to be considered for nomination as an Agoura High School delegate to this very popular leadership program at Pepperdine this summer.
Timeline, by grade level, of what to do this spring:

SENIORS
:
1. Focus on financial aid
Due Monday, March 2, 2009: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(www.fafsa.ed.gov) and the GPA Verification Form for the California Grant
(google search 2009 California Grant GPA verification form)
Scholarship bulletin is available online at Agoura’s website. Check it
frequently because it is updated when new scholarships become available.
There is also a list of other websites included at the bottom of this
scholarship bulletin.
2. Community college plans
Sign up with Mrs. Hawkins asap for the Moorpark College bus tour scheduled
for Wednesday, March 11. Before the tour, you should check out the
website and application on www.moorparkcollege.edu
Students planning to attend Pierce College (www.piercecollege.edu) are
encouraged to meet with the Pierce admissions counselor during support on
Thursday, March 12. Their application has been online since October so
you should apply there asap!
An admissions counselor from Santa Monica College (www.smc.edu) will be
available to answer questions on Thursday, March 12 during nutrition in
the College & Career Center. There is no bus scheduled this year to take
seniors to SMC this year because of the budget crisis so students must
make their own arrangements to take their placement tests at SMC.
Another popular community college for Agoura students is Santa Barbara
City College (www.sbcc.edu). Their budget did not allow them to visit
Agoura High School so you must make an appointment to go to their campus
for a tour as well as to take the placement tests.
If you are considering applying to any other community college, go online
NOW and fill out the free application! You must also arrange to take
placement tests in math and English. See your counselor or Mrs. Hawkins,
your college & career adviser, if you have questions.
Again, the websites for Agoura High School students’ most popular
community colleges: www.moorparkcollege.edu; www.smc.edu;
www.piercecollege.edu; www.sbcc.edu
3. Have you signed up to take the AP tests in May? Contact your AP teacher
and/or counselor about the procedure to do this or you may email AHS
testing coordinator Mrs. Cheryl Wright at cwright@lvusd.org. Keep in mind
that the colleges to which you applied will expect you to take the AP test
if you are enrolled in an Advance Placement course.
4. Keep up your grades! If you are not admitted to a UC or Cal State,
remember you can appeal that decision. Your appeal is more valid if you
can prove that you had a strong academic fall semester. You should also
continue to perform well academically this spring semester so your final
transcript will cement your college acceptance. If you do not do well your
final semester in high school, you run the risk of having your offer of
college admission withdrawn. By continuing to perform well academically,
you are also preparing yourself for a strong beginning for your college
experience. Just like an athlete would continue to work out over the
summer before playing his or her sport in college, so must you keep
yourself mentally agile!

JUNIORS
I hope you were able to attend the **College Knowledge workshops from 6:30
to 9 p.m. at Calabasas High School on Tuesday, March 3.

2. Register now for this spring’s ACT (www.actstudent.org) and/or SATs
(www.collegeboard.com) by going online or pick up a registration packet
from Mrs. Hawkins in the College & Career Center.
The UCs require EITHER the SAT Reasoning Test OR the ACT Plus Writing AND
two SAT Subject Tests in two separate subject areas. If you take an SAT
math subject test, the UCs will only accept the SAT Math Level 2 subject
test. If you are planning to major in engineering, the UCs require that
you submit an SAT Subject Test in a science (physics, biology or
chemistry) AND the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test.
The Cal States require EITHER the SAT Reasoning Test OR the ACT. Please
note that Cal Poly San Luis Obispo “prefers” the ACT.
It is your responsibility to research the ACT and/or SAT entrance exams
requirements of the private colleges to which you are considering
applying. You will find this information on each individual college’s
website.
Community colleges in California do NOT require either the ACT and/or SATs.
You should also have registered for your Advance Placement tests in the
subjects you are taking. Colleges generally expect to see that you’ve
taken this test at the conclusion of your year of taking an AP class. And,
as you probably are aware, many colleges will offer you college credit
(which saves you money and helps you advance or take other subjects)
depending on your scores.

3. If you haven’t already begun to research colleges, start now! Many
colleges send their admissions counselors to Agoura to meet with our
students. These scheduled visits are listed on the website, announced on
the bulletins, written on the white board outside Room C-3. Sitting in on
their visits in the College & Career Center that are generally scheduled
either during support, nutrition or lunch is an excellent opportunity
either to learn about a college you don’t know about or a college in which
you are very interested. These admissions counselors visit not only to
talk about their schools but also they want to meet you in person! If you
meet with a UC admissions counselor or a private college’s admissions
counselor who comes to Agoura as a junior then you return to visit with
that same admissions counselor your senior year, you will make an
impression on that college admissions counselor who may be the person
reading your college application! This is for you! Keep in mind these
admissions counselors who come to Agoura are also visiting other high
schools in our area so this invaluable, unique opportunity keeps YOU
competitive in the college application process.
Besides these college visits that are scheduled this spring, you may want
to attend either the Moorpark High School’s College Fair or one of this
spring’s national college fairs sponsored by the National Association of
College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) in Los Angeles or Ventura. See Mrs..
Hawkins for more details.

Besides these college visits to Agoura and/or the college fairs, the best,
most reliable information is found on each individual college’s website..
How do you research colleges? First, do you know what you want to study?
If so, then you will want to find colleges that offer majors in which you
are interested. There are books (such as the Index of Majors) as well as
several internet sites that will list or sort colleges by majors.
Agoura’s NAVIANCE program will come up with such lists as will the
www.echoices.com website funded by our ROP. The free website of all
California colleges is www.californiacolleges.edu If you want to go to
college in another state, then you can use either NAVIANCE or echoices
websites to search for colleges geographically. The map in the College &
Career Center is also a good visual aid for students looking for colleges..
Looking at this map may also help students to realize that they want a
college in a warm—or cold (skiing?!)—climate area, in a rural or urban
setting. Scores of out-of-state (as well as California) colleges have
sent us brochures and catalogues and those are filed in the College &
Career Center first by state and then alphabetically by college name.
In-state and out-of-state colleges with strong “liberal arts” programs are
good choices for students who aren’t sure exactly what they want to study
(suggested reading Loren Pope’s “Colleges that Change People’s Lives”).
Do you want a large university with “rah-rah” sports teams or a smaller
college with smaller class size? Do you want to earn an athletic (or
music) scholarship and play your sport (or musical instrument) in college?
Many factors are involved when choosing a college. Some students set up a
check list or chart using the excel software, for example, listing all
these factors under each college to which they want to apply. You may
want to choose three different types or “tiers” of colleges to keep on
your list. The top tier could be considered your “reach” colleges, or the
most difficult colleges. (These may be the UCs or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
or a private college or one of the Ivy League colleges. You may find these
listed in the books about Ivy League colleges or the “Public Ivies.”) Your
personalized middle tier of schools may be the very difficult colleges and
then the bottom tier of colleges would be the difficult colleges but still
perhaps more “reasonable” or “realistic” fits for you. The rule of thumb
here is to narrow your choices to about one to three colleges in each tier
so you end up applying to between three and nine (or more) colleges as
long as you’ve done careful research on colleges that would be good “fits”
for you. Never leave off a college you’ve dreamed about attending but
suddenly fear you might not be admitted. I think it would be worse to omit
that college from your list then later regret not applying (and always
wondering what the outcome would have been). There are examples of good
outcomes using this method: One student applied to UCLA as one of his
reach schools…and was admitted! Another student applied to only his reach
colleges and had to scramble before the application deadline to pick other
more realistic colleges for him because he had been denied to all his top
(and only) choices, but he was still offered admission to some very good
colleges later that spring.

4. Keep up your grades! Unless the colleges to which you apply your
senior year request “mid-year reports” or your 7th semester transcript,
your junior year is the last chance you will have to show your grades to
these colleges. Tutoring is available at Agoura in many different ways.
There is free math tutoring offered through the math honor society/math
tutoring sessions c/o Mr. Beaton. There is free tutoring offered in any
subject every Tuesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Library c/o Mrs. Hawkins,
tutoring center supervisor. And remember you may check in with your
teacher during support period every day! If you want to pay a fellow
student to schedule more tutoring time, see Mrs. Hawkins in the College &
Career Center and she will post your tutoring request as a job on the job
board in the glass case outside Room C-3.

5. What are your summer plans between your junior and senior year? Again,
whatever you do this coming summer could have a positive impact on your
college applications: an interesting family vacation, a challenging
college course or high school summer school; a summer job, a summer
leadership and/or volunteer opportunity. There is a list of summer
opportunities available from the College & Career Center; some leadership
and/or scholarship opportunities for juniors are listed on the scholarship
bulletin also available online or from the College & Career Center.

6. If you want to play your sport in college, at the end of your junior
year you must register online with the NCAA at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
You should start contacting college coaches. You can research what
colleges offer which sports at which athletic division by using NAVIANCE
and/or echoices online.

SOPHOMORES:**
1. Consider registering to take an SAT subject test in June if you are
taking that subject this year. The list of subjects—such as chemistry,
biology or world history—is available from the registration packets in
the College & Career Center or online at www.collegeboard.com

If you are taking an AP class, you should also have registered for your
Advance Placement tests in that subject. Colleges generally expect to see
that you’ve taken this test at the conclusion of your year of taking an AP
class. And, as you probably are aware, many colleges will offer you
college credit (which saves you money and helps you advance or take other
subjects) depending on your scores.

2. Keep up your grades! If you did well your freshman year, keep up that
trend! If you stumbled a bit last year, but are on firmer ground
academically this year so much the better. Colleges look for consistent
academic performance and/or improvement. Either way please know that
tutoring is available at Agoura in many different ways. There is free
math tutoring offered through the math honor society/math tutoring
sessions c/o Mr. Beaton. There is free tutoring offered in any subject
every Tuesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Library c/o Mrs. Hawkins,
tutoring center supervisor. And remember you may check in with your
teacher during support period every day! (You can also BE a tutor and
that would look good on your college application.) If you want to pay a
fellow student to schedule more tutoring time, see Mrs. Hawkins in the
College & Career Center and she will post your tutoring request as a job
on the job board in the glass case outside Room C-3.

3. What are your summer plans? Whatever you do this coming summer could
have a positive impact on those future college applications: an
interesting family vacation, a challenging college course or high school
summer school; a summer job, a summer leadership and/or volunteer
opportunity. There is a list of summer opportunities available from the
College & Career Center. There are even a few leadership and/or
scholarship opportunities for sophomores that you may consider. Also start
organizing your athletic accomplishments and begin reading about and/or
researching online the colleges that offer your sport, if you are an
athlete and want to get an athletic scholarship for college.

4. It’s not too early to start researching colleges. One easy way is by
coming to the college visits scheduled in the College & Career Center and
listening to the colleges’ admissions counselors who come to Agoura to
meet with our students. These scheduled visits are listed on the website,
announced on the bulletins, written on the white board outside Room C-3.
Sitting in on their visits in the College & Career Center that are
generally scheduled either during support, nutrition or lunch is an
excellent opportunity either to learn about a college you don’t know about
or a college in which you are very interested. These admissions counselors
visit not only to talk about their schools but also they want to meet you
in person! And continue meeting with these college representatives
throughout your junior and senior year!

Besides these college visits that are scheduled this spring, you may want
to attend either the Moorpark High School’s College Fair or one of this
spring’s national college fairs sponsored by the National Association of
College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) in Los Angeles or Ventura. Mrs.
Hawkins will have more details.

FRESHMEN:
1. Beginning with the Class of 2012, the UCs have decided not to require
applicants to submit an SAT Subject Test. However, you are responsible
for checking with other in-state and/or out-of-state private and public
universities to determine what their entrance exam requirements are.
2. Are you planning to take a summer school class through Las Virgenes
Unified School District or through a community college? Have you
researched other community service and/or programs held at other
university campuses? Keep busy during the summer and keep notes about
your plans so you can include this information on your college application
some day!
3. It is not too early to start researching colleges! I hope you were able
to attend the College Knowledge workshops at Calabasas. Now a fun way to
get started learning about colleges is to attend college fairs. You are
fortunate to have some to choose from this spring: Moorpark High School’s
College Fair or the two national college fairs sponsored by the National
Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) scheduled for Los
Angeles or Ventura. Mrs. Hawkins will have more details.
4. Your grades are important! Don’t believe any rumors that “your
freshman grades don’t ‘count’ ” because even the UC and the Cal State
applications require their applicants to enter the classes and the grades
you received your freshman year. Besides this is the foundation upon which
you will hopefully climb to academic success throughout your high school
years here at Agoura. Remember that your Link Crew connections, your
teachers, your counselor will help you. There is free math tutoring
offered through the math honor society/math tutoring sessions c/o Mr.
Beaton. There is free tutoring offered in any subject every Tuesday from 3
to 4:30 p.m. in the Library c/o Mrs. Hawkins, tutoring center supervisor.
And remember you may check in with your teacher during support period
every day! If you want to pay a fellow student to schedule more tutoring
time, see Mrs. Hawkins in the College & Career Center and she will post
your tutoring request as a job on the job board in the glass case outside
Room C-3.

As You Start Winter Break 2008 - 2009

Some suggestions for all Agoura students from your friendly college & career adviser Mrs. Hawkins: What to do now—and over winter break--to get ready for college.

SENIORS:

Email and/or college “portals” or students’ college webpages?

Be sure to check frequently your email and/or the portals/webpages of each and

every college to which you have applied! Colleges--this year in particular--will

be VERY STRICT about your meeting deadlines, responding to requests for more

information and/or taking math and/or English placement/assessment tests on

time or sending 7th semester transcripts/”mid-year” reports. If you miss a deadline, for

example, or your grades have dropped significantly, your offer of admission could be

pulled so please pay attention to this advice!

Did you apply to Cal State Channel Islands? If so, be sure to send them your unofficial transcript! Here’s the specific request from the CSUCI admissions counselor: “We are going to begin evaluating our First Time Freshman within the next week and wanted to first evaluate our Service Area which are those schools in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Our local students will receive admission decisions first once their files are complete. Students listed . . .as ICMP means (their file) INCOMPLETE and we need their unofficial HS transcripts in order for them to receive an admissions decision. If they would like to hear FIRST before any outside our service area …send me …transcripts or …submit (your) test scores and transcripts.”

Early Decision College Admission?

ü If you were admitted to a college through its early decision process, as a courtesy please notify your counselor and/or your college adviser when you return from winter break. We LOVE to hear about your good news!

ü Also remember to withdraw your applications from other schools.

ü If you were NOT admitted early decision and/or deferred, be sure to notify your teachers and your counselors so they will be able to help you, if need be, with other applications you may decide to submit to other colleges that are still open

Financial aid?

ü Get your PIN (Personal Identification Number) for your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.pin.ed.gov

ü After you receive your PIN, go online to www.fafsa.ed.gov and fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)….then

ü Submit your FAFSA after Jan. 1, 2009—when your return from your New Year’s Eve party?!

ü Monthly scholarship bulletins are available online at agourahighschool.net or pick up a copy from Mrs. Hawkins in the College & Career Center.

ü In the meantime, go online to www.fastweb.com for an initial scholarship search. There are more than 600,000 scholarships available on just this one website! Remember that you will probably have to write essays and list your extracurricular activities, etc. but winning $1,000 (or more, or less) for spending an hour or two worth of work is worth it!

Community colleges:

ü Pierce College’s application for Fall 2009 is already online at www.piercecollege.edu There is no charge to apply and there are many advantages to applying early, including being able to submit your FAFSA early so, if you do decide on the community college option later in the spring, some financial aid may be available to you to buy your books by September ’09.

ü Be sure to attend the Community College panel discussion during lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in Room A-1. You will receive information on how to apply and register for classes at Moorpark, Pierce, Santa Monica and Santa Barbara City community colleges from their representatives who will be the panelists. If you have any questions, be sure to see your college & career adviser Mrs. Hawkins.

Operation Shadow assignments for juniors and seniors will not be available until after mid-January. Check with your College & Career Adviser Mrs. Hawkins then.

JUNIORS:

Testing?

Your PSAT results are now available from your counselor or from Mrs. Wortham in the Counseling office.

The PSAT test results should help you prepare for your SATs: A “Question-and-Answer Service” is provided by Collegeboard for the January SAT Reasoning Test. Only the SAT Reasoning Test is offered in March. The traditional times to take the SAT Reasoning and Subject tests is in May or June of your junior year. If you are taking an AP test in the same subject as offered by the SAT Subject tests, it is suggested that you take those SAT Subject Tests in May then your SAT Reasoning and ACT Plus Writing tests in May. If you are not taking an AP test in May then the best time to take your SAT Reasoning test is in May and your SAT Subject tests in June, at the end of the year when you have the most knowledge about that subject. At any rate, sign up early for your SATs (on www.collegeboard.com) and/or ACTs (on www.actstudent.org)

--If you are thinking about applying to a University of California, you must take either the SAT Reasoning Test OR the ACT Plus Writing AND two SAT Subject Tests in two separate subject areas. If you take a math subject test, the UCs will only accept the SAT Subject Test Math

Level 2. If you are considering a major in engineering, you must submit an SAT Subject Test in

both math level 2 and a science. Check online at www.universityofcalifornia.edu

--If you are considering a California State University, you may submit either the SAT Reasoning Test OR the ACT. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, specifically, “prefers” the ACT. Check online at www.csumentor.edu

--It is the student’s responsibility to check on the websites of private in- or out-of-state colleges (such as the University of Southern California, Stanford or the Ivy League colleges) to determine those entrance exam requirements. Your College & Career Adviser Mrs. Hawkins will help you find those websites, if you’re not able to find them by “Google-searching” them.

Summer plans?

--What are your plans for this coming summer? Are you interested in taking a college-level class at an in- or out-of-state state university? Would you like to travel or do some volunteer work? Start brainstorming with your family about your summer plans. We have a list of summer ideas in the College & Career Center.

Your grades?

How would you like to get paid just for getting good grades? Your sophomore and junior grade point average could pay off with a California grant when you apply for financial aid as a senior!

Operation Shadow assignments for juniors and seniors will not be available until after mid-January. Check with your College & Career Adviser Mrs. Hawkins then.

SOPHOMORES and FRESHMEN:

Study, study, study! How would you like to get paid just for getting good grades? Your sophomore and junior grade point average could pay off with a California grant when you apply for financial aid as a senior!

Read some good books (such as “Colleges That Change Lives,” by Loren Pope or The Fiske Guide to Colleges or “You’re Gonna Love This College Guide,” by Marty Nemko).

Register for a June 6, 2009, SAT Subject Test online at www.collegeboard.com if you are taking biology, chemistry, or any of the other subject tests offered in subjects you are enrolled in and will finish in June. See your College & Career Adviser Mrs. Hawkins, talk to your teachers or ask your counselors if you have more questions when you return from winter break.

Your summer plans:

--What are your plans for this coming summer? Are you interested in taking a college-level class at an in- or out-of-state state university? Would you like to travel or do some volunteer work? Do you want to take part in a program to learn all about leadership. Start brainstorming with your family about your summer plans. We have a list of summer ideas in the College & Career Center.
